Starting Longfield - A BIG Step

Starting secondary school is a huge step for all children. You are moving from being ‘top of the heap’ in primary school to being the new girls/boys in secondary school. Top that off with the normal anxiety of growing up and it can be a very stressful time for you. Usually however, it is a very exciting time for pupils as you get to meet new friends, learn new subjects and meet many new teachers.

In most children's experience of moving to secondary school, you will find that you you will be very tired for the first few weeks. The days are longer and you have a lot more responsibility. You need to get used to having many teachers and classes to attend and trying to organise yourself with equipment and timetables. You can help yourself when starting secondary school by ensuring that you have the correct uniform, books and supplies needed.

You should always talk to your family about your new school and the highs and lows of your days. (Make sure they take an interest and listen to you) Being able to talk things through will be invaluable for you and will also help your parent / carers to get to know about your friends and teachers.

The best source of information and advice for starting secondary, is from children who had just finished first year themselves. Let’s face it, they know what it was like and have come through the first year of this adjustment. They know the system, socially, educationally and pressure wise, so their experience is priceless!

TOP TIPs for kids starting a new secondary school

Top tips for kids starting a new secondary school

  • Make sure you are organised - pack your bags, pencil cases, and so forth, the night before school so you don't have to worry in the morning
  • Never be afraid to ask for help, or talk to someone you trust, like your mum or dad, or tutor
  • Always make the first effort to make new friends - it will help you meet new classmates and make the social side of school far more enjoyable
  • First impressions last a long time, so make sure yours are good ones - for organisation, presentation, and behaviour! This is your chance to make a fresh start - embrace it and make the most of all the new opportunities. Try out clubs and activities. And always remember you will make new friends!
  • Make notes and write down anything you need to remember
  • Find out the layout of the school, and learn where your classrooms are (and the toilets!)
  • Find out your timetable and remember it. Find out what time you need to be at school, and what time you need to go home!
  • Make sure you know what uniform you need, and what to bring in or wear for sport
  • And finally - try to enjoy yourself. Making new friends and learning new things is an exciting time so try to get past your nerves and just remember that everyone else is in the same boat, so have a good time!
