 KS 4 Design & Technology

Design and Technology helps to develop a flexible approach to the problems and opportunities pupils face in a rapidly changing society. It stimulates originality, encourages enterprise and emphasises quality.
Design and Technology is, in the main, a practical subject, which involves the development of practical skills, creativity, problem solving, designing, testing and evaluation.  It involves the use of a wide range of processes and materials. Pupils can choose to opt for their preferred Design and Technology subject in Year 9 and have access to a range of accredited courses including GCSE and BTEC.

In Years 10 and 11 pupils may choose from 3 GCSE subjects: Food Technology, Resistant Materials and Electronic Products.

Candidates are required to submit a substantial coursework folder including evidence of practical work.

Assessment of each of the GCSE courses on offer is:

Controlled Assessment   60% - one major project
The project will be internally assessed and externally moderated.  Throughout the project candidates should address the industrial and commercial practices, and the moral, social, cultural and environmental issues arising from their work.

At the end of Year 8 pupils have the opportunity to opt for their preferred Design and Technology subject which they can go on to study throughout the w hole of Year 9.

Depending on ability, pupils will be guided towards courses most suited to them within their chosen area.
Some pupils will be given the opportunity to complete their first GCSE in either Food Technology or Resistant Materials, as an early entry, at the end of Year 9. They can then go on to further their interest and add to their qualifications by adding a second Technology GCSE in Years 10 or 11.

Alternatively, to ensure progression, early entry pupils have the opportunity to study AS level qualifications in Food Technology or Product Design. This will be discussed with individual pupils as appropriate.
