 Science at Longfield

Science is a vital part of any person's education because of the way in which our lives depend upon Science and Technology. By developing science skills and knowledge we hope students will be prepared for life in the 21st century.
Science is a core subject in the National Curriculum.

 Subject content KS4

The national curriculum for KS4 science changed in 2006. All students now study OCR 21st Century Science for 20% of the total curriculum time which will lead to two GCSE in science. The courses are designed to be appropriate for pupils’ ability, though still cover aspects of biology, chemistry and physics.  Pupils will be allowed to study at their own pace and the modular style examinations allow the exams to be spread throughout KS4.

All pupils study Core science in year 10 and then in year 11 study either additional or additional applied science; depending upon their ability and whether they would like to study science in the future. There are 2 levels of difficulty for all of the courses offered; foundation and higher. Coursework is still a part of the courses, but is centred on scientific skills and investigation.

Pupils are provided with work books and practise papers and revision books are available for the price of £3.50.

The shared work area contains target sheets and help sheets for all topics of the courses. Useful web sites are also highlighted. Revision and homework is regularly set on SAM learning

 KS3 Science

Pupils study science from year 7. In each year of KS3 they study 12 different topics covering aspects of biology, chemistry and physics, with an underlying aspect for scientific enquiry running throughout. Each year progresses from the last, building upon previous learning. At the end of year 9 all pupils sit their SAT examinations in Maths, English and science. This exam is externally set and marked.

At the end of each topic, all pupils sit a test; with the average marks being reported to parents/ carers. At the end of each year all pupils sit an end of year examination based upon the work they have covered. These marks help check progress.

In the shared area, target sheets and helpful websites are highlighted and SAM learning homework and revision is regular set. Revision books are available for the price of £2.50
