 KS4 Physical Education

KS4 Subject Content
At key stage four pupils can opt for PE PLUS. This is a double option spanning two years. The first year the course centres on a BTEC certificate in sport. This involves completing three units of coursework and there is no examination. The qualification for completing this is the equivalent to two GCSE grades. Units include: The Body in Sport, Practical Sport, Preparation for Sports Performance and Leadership. The second year will concentrate on the GCSE syllabus. This involves being marked on four practical areas to produce a practical coursework mark contributing 50% to the final grade. A further 10% is added for a written coursework on an analysis of performance. The final 40% of the grade is made up of a written exam based on theory work completed throughout the year.

 PE at Longfield

PE develops pupils’ competence and confidence to take part in a range of physical activities that become a central part of their lives, both in and out of school.

A high-quality PE curriculum enables all pupils to enjoy and succeed in many kinds of physical activity. They develop a wide range of skills and the ability to use tactics, strategies and compositional ideas to perform successfully.

PE helps pupils develop personally and socially. They work as individuals, in groups and in teams, developing concepts of fairness and of personal and social responsibility. They take on different roles and responsibilities, including leadership, coaching and officiating. Through the range of experiences that PE offers, they learn how to be effective in competitive, creative and challenging situations.

 KS3 Physical Education

KS3 Subject Content
At key stage three pupils follow a broad curriculum including activities such as swimming, gymnastics, trampolining, dance, hockey, netball, rugby, football and basketball during the winter term. The summer term introduces sports such as tennis, rounders, cricket and athletics. Lessons are based on the five strands for national curriculum assessment and health related fitness plays a large role in this. Pupils are encouraged to achieve their potential and an extensive extra curricular programme supports this.
