 Modern Foreign Languages at Longfield

Why Speak a Foreign Language
Join the global community - Believe it or not, the majority of the world does not speak English. We are so isolated that we hardly realise this. New thoughts and ideas are happening everywhere and they are not being immediately translated. Will we get left behind.

The world is getting smaller and we are coming into contact with more non-English speakers all the time. Gain an advantage for yourself in work, the people you meet and on holiday by being able to communicate with people in their language. This will set you apart and gain you immediate respect and credibility.

Is This the Right Subject For Me?
If you enjoy communicating with other people, finding out how language works and learning about different countries and cultures, studying GCSE French or Spanish is an excellent choice for you!

You Will Be Able
to share your interests, ideas and opinions with other people who speak the language

learn about countries where the language is spoken

add an international dimension to your choice of GCSE subjects, which is something many employers and higher education providers look for

learn many skills which are useful in a wide range of careers, such as the ability to communicate clearly, being confident about speaking in public and using problem solving strategies

relate to greater opportunities to work abroad, or for companies in the UK with international links. Many employers look for people with language skills.

Before and After Taking the Course

What Do I Need To Know, Or Be Able To Do, Before Taking This Course?
If you’ve studied French before, you’re well prepared to do this GCSE course! You already know a lot of the vocabulary and grammar you’ll need for GCSE. You know how to talk about yourself, your family and friends, your hobbies, where you live, school, holidays, food and drink. You‘ll build on this knowledge during your GCSE course, and move on to new topics. If you are starting this as a new language for GCSE you can be confident in knowing that, through your previous studies, you have already built up a lot of valuable language skills which will help you to learn a new language.

What Can I Do After I’ve Completed The Course?
People with language skills and knowledge are highly thought of in the modern world. They stand out as talented and successful people, with broad exciting horizons. Taking GCSE French or Spanish means you will:

be able to study AS and A2 French courses

add an extra dimension to your personal skills profile which will impress anyone who reads your CV

be in a stronger position to get a job in companies with international links or improve employability if you would like to work abroad.
