Mathematics at Longfield at KS 3

Over Key Stage 3, pupils follow a continuous course covering the Government’s new Key Stage 3 framework, which covers Number, Algebra, Geometry and Statistics. The department follows a tiered structure to schemes of work, these allow pupils the opportunity to build both their skills and confidence in each of the four areas. Homebooks are available to purchase to support pupils' learning out of school.

Pupils are assessed with the use of APP, alongside formal assessments. APP assessments occur continually throughout Key Stage 3 to ensure that pupils are progressing as expected; the assessments also help the department to tailor teaching to the needs of classes and individual pupils.

Pupils are given feedback on their assessments so they are aware of the steps they need to take in order to improve.  Teachers work closely with pupils in order to enable them to progress to the next level.

In year 9, pupils undertake a range of activities designed to help them to prepare for their GCSE Mathematics course; the year 9 curriculum has been specifically designed to help pupils develop the skills needed for Key Stage 4 and as such all pupils will complete their first module at the end of year 9.

Some pupils work through an accelerated pathway and are expected to complete their GCSE Mathematics studies in Year 10. Year 11 studies are optional and pupils have the option to study OCR Advanced Mathematics, which covers A-Level topics or they can choose to achieve a further GCSE in Statistics.

Year 9 pupils at Longfield start their GCSE studies early, following the new Edexcel GCSE Mathematics specification; either as a modular route or as a linear route. Whichever pathway your son or daughter follows, the Mathematics Department at Longfield is dedicated to ensuring your son or daughter reach their full potential in Mathematics.
