 ICT at KS4

 Subject Content at KS 4

The increasing use of technology in all aspects of society makes confident, creative and productive use of ICT an essential skill for life. ICT capability encompasses not only the mastery of technical skills and techniques, but also the understanding to apply these skills purposefully, safely and responsibly in learning, everyday life and employment. ICT capability is fundamental to participation and engagement in modern society.
We are following the AQA GCSE ICT course which is made up of a formal examination worth 40% and two pieces of coursework each worth 30%. The options course is delivered over 1 year with 4 teaching hours per week. The route 1 course is delivered over 2 years with 2 teaching hours per week.

Year 9 option

We offer an extra option in year 9, where students can get a sample of what a higher qualification in ICT might entail. This course is run over 1 year with 2 teaching hours per week and results in a Functional Skills Qualification.

 ICT at Longfield

Information Technology is taught so that children will become familiar with, and able to use, computers and computer software to help them communicate, investigate and solve problems.  They also learn to use other kinds of everyday electronic equipment such as video recorders.

Information Technology is not intended to replace reading, writing and basic maths skills such as arithmetic, but to complement it - providing a sound basis that children can build on in secondary school, so that they understand how computers and Information Technology are used in industry and the workplace.

 ICT at KS3

Subject Content at KS 3.

In ks3 we have written the SOW to fully cover the national curriculum and give students full access to all levels. Along with this we are introducing new topics to give students a wider understanding of the subject and an idea of how real ICT solutions can be used in industry. Topics cover a wide variety of packages and at all time students are encouraged to evaluate the package they have used and to look for alternatives available.

Students will complete tasks in File management, Viruses, Desk Top Publishing, Sequencing instructions, Email, Information reliability & bias, spreadsheets, Future Technology, E-Waist, Cryptography, Social Networking and Game design. Students will also be given the opportunity to learn about animation and web design during lunchtime clubs.

Support
If students need extra support in their studies they can attend one of our “out of hours” ICT clubs. These are run on lunchtimes (12.45-13.:15) and on a Thursday night after school. The whole department can be contacted via email for any help or assistance.
