 Art at Longfield at KS 4

There are currently two qualifications currently on offer to pupils in YR9 these are GCSE (Unendorsed/Photography) and the Arts Award. In YR10 and YR11 there are also currently two qualifications on offer, these are GCSE (Unendorsed/Photography/Fine Art/Textiles Art/Graphics Art) and AS-Level Photography. Pupils may opt to do two or more of these qualifications.

 GCSE ART & DESIGN - UNENDORSED
This is a broad based course where pupils will produce work exploring all elements of Art & Design including drawing, painting, printing, sculpture, textiles, photography and graphics. Pupils will complete two coursework projects on the themes of Objects and Environment.

 GCSE ART & DESIGN - FINE ART
Pupils will produce work focusing on elements of drawing, painting, mixed media, and sculpture, this will include some printing and lens/light based media.

 GCSE ART & DESIGN - TEXTILES
Pupils will  produce work focusing on elements of printed , dyed, constructed, stitched, & embellished fabrics, this will include some fashion and domestic textiles.

 GCSE ART & DESIGN - GRAPHICS
Pupils will produce work which will include elements of illustration, advertising, packaging, design for print, computer graphics, multimedia, web design, lens/light-based media: film, animation, video and photography.

GCSE ART & DESIGN - PHOTOGRAPHY
Pupils will produce work which will include elements of photo-journalism, narrative photography, experimental imagery, photographic installation, new media practice, video and film.

Assessment: Coursework Portfolio 100%
Grading: Pass

 The Arts Award is a nationally recognised qualification at levels 1,2 and 3 on the National Qualifications Framework. Below you can see the equivalent standard in each level and some example qualifications which are similar in size to the Arts Award.

 WHY ARTS AWARD?
Provides a refreshing alternative to more traditional examinations
Focuses on progression in the arts rather than ability when assessed.
Fosters communication and leadership skills and builds self-confidence.
Helps to prepare young people for further education and employment.

 Through the Silver Arts Award, you’ll develop your arts skills and understanding of the creative industries, lead activities and events in art and achieve a Level 2 national qualification. You will record your experiences in a diary, log book or journal. This could be made up of photographs, PowerPoint’s, video clips. You will submit this work as your portfolio for assessment. There are two units:

AS-LEVEL PHOTOGRAPHY
Pupils will be introduced to a variety of experiences exploring a range of photographic media, techniques and processes. They will be made aware of both traditional and new technologies. Pupils will explore relevant images, artefacts and resources relating to Photography and a wider range of art and design, from the past and from recent times, including European and non-European examples. This will be integral to the investigating and making process. Their responses to these examples will be shown through practical and critical activities which demonstrate their understanding of different styles, genres and traditions.

 CREATIVE INDUSTRIES - ART & DESIGN CAREER PROSPECTS
Interior Designer, Fashion Designer, Product Designer, Graphic Designer, Illustrator, Make-up Artist, Hairdresser, Animator, Theatrical Artist, Landscape / Garden Designer, Civil Engineer, Architecture, Theatre Costume Design, Textile Designer, CAD Design, Draughtsperson, Printmaker, Film Making, Special Effects, Sculptor, Photographer, Web-site Designer, Soft-furnishing Designer, Theatre Design.

 

 

 
 

 Art at Longfield at KS 3

  In Art & Design at Longfield School, pupils explore visual, tactile and other sensory experiences to communicate ideas and meanings. They work with traditional and new media, developing confidence, competence, imagination and creativity. They learn to appreciate and value images and artefacts across times and cultures, and to understand the contexts in which they were made. In art, craft and design, pupils reflect critically on their own and other people’s work, judging quality, value and meaning. They learn to think and act as artists, craftspeople and designers, working creatively and intelligently. They develop an appreciation of art, craft and design, and its role in the creative and cultural industries that enrich their lives.

Key concepts of Art and Design KS3
There are a number of key concepts that underpin the study of art, craft and design. Pupils need to understand these concepts in order to deepen and broaden their knowledge, skills and understanding.

 Creativity
Producing imaginative images, artefacts and other outcomes that are both original and of value.
Exploring and experimenting with ideas, materials, tools and techniques. Taking risks and learning from mistakes.

Competence
Investigating,
analysing, designing, making, reflecting and evaluating effectively. Making informed choices about media, techniques and processes.

Cultural understanding
Engaging with a range of images and artefacts from different contexts, recognising the varied characteristics of different cultures and using them to inform their creating and making. Understanding the role of the artist, craftsperson and designer in a range of cultures, times and
contexts.

Critical understanding
Exploring visual, tactile and other sensory qualities of their own and others’ work. Engaging with ideas, images and artefacts, and identifying how values and meanings are conveyed.
Developing their own views and expressing reasoned judgments.                

Analysing and reflecting on work from diverse contexts.
